All sign now for Daniel’s Law. Every signature counts.

Our petition hit 35,000 at 8pm tonight.

We knew numbers would increase in the period leading up to Daniel’s serious case review report, but we could not have anticipated the scale and speed of growing interest. Thank you to everyone who has signed and supported.

This is now a serious issue for government to consider. Our petition will be delivered to Downing Street early next week to mark the communication of the SCR (previews Monday, public Tuesday) – I will confirm details very soon.

The petition will then remain open through media and parliamentary debate, providing a clear platform for public opinion.

All sign now for Daniel’s Law. Every signature counts.

Mum leads calls for Daniel’s Law

Thanks to the Coventry Observer for this article today, Twitter is busy tonight, more signatures coming in from Coventry.

Mum leads calls for Daniel’s Law

A PETITION calling on new laws to be introduced in the wake of Daniel Pelka’s murder has been signed by more than 12,000 people.

Daniel’s Law calls on mandatory reporting of child abuse – something which is not currently the case. Mother-of-two Paula Barrow launched the petition after being affected by the four-year-old’s story and concerned over the circumstances of his death. The Manchester mum said other countries had introduced mandatory reporting and there was a ‘critical hole’ in UK law.

She has written to top government brass – including deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg – in a bid to change the law. “One way in which we can help better protect children is to make those around them legally responsible,” she said. “Legislation is needed which requires staff […]

Support is building

Parliamentary support for Daniel’s Law continues to build:

Sarah Champion, MP for Rotherham – signed
Andrew Gwynne, Shadow Minister for Health – signed
Sharon Hodgson, Shadow Minister for Children & Families – signed
Lucy Powell, MP for Manchester Central – signed

The Manchester Evening News ran a feature today with supporting quote from Lucy Powell, presently available on line.

I am advised that Daniel’s serious case review is set to report on Monday September 16 – I will confirm the date as soon as I can. Whatever its recommendations, Daniel’s death has highlighted a hole in UK law which must be addressed to better protect vulnerable children like him in the future.

Almost 12,000 have now signed in agreement.

Please keep spreading the word.

We can make this happen!

More good news!

Sarah Champion MP tweeted in support of Daniel’s Law over the weekend ‘paid professionals should have a duty to report suspicions of abuse’. Sharon Hodgson, MP for Washington and Sunderland West and Shadow Minister for Children and Families, retweeted Sarah Champion’s statement this morning. I am speaking again with Geoffrey Robinson MP for Coventry North West tomorrow and hope to soon have his public support.

Today, I was interviewed by the Manchester Evening News, their story in support of Daniel’s Law will run this week and I will share the link as soon as I have it. There can be no doubt that this campaign continues to build momentum in the lull before the media storm that will surround the report of Daniel’s serious case review later this month.

Everyone please continue to sign, tweet and share – numbers will guarantee the biggest impact at the time it matters most.

We can make this […]

Sarah Champion MP for Rotherham (@SarahChampionMP) today became the first MP to sign

Sarah Champion MP for Rotherham (@SarahChampionMP) today became the first MP to sign, publicly support and share the campaign link for Daniel’s Law via Twitter. Thank you, Sarah!

This is a landmark achievement; we need the support of Parliament to make new legislation possible – now that we have our first MP officially confirmed, we hope more will follow. If you have not done so already, please write to your MP – you can find a sample letter posted on this page August 22; many have FB and Twitter accounts, where you can also reach them.

We look forward to speaking further with Sarah – and with other MPs who have shown interest – early next week. Please don’t leave this page without signing this very important petition via the link below and sharing with your FB connections.

Pressure for mandatory reporting builds as our current system continues to fail children across the UK.

Mandate Now fronts a campaign for mandatory reporting on behalf of five charities, see ITV report of yesterday; these charities have petitioned successive governments for 10 years; their Change.org campaign for mandatory reporting began in March 2013.

Following the serious case review, we will make our petition for Daniel’s Law count at a time of critical media and public interest. We will then work with Mandate Now to ensure we achieve our common purpose and make reporting child abuse the law.

Mandatory reporting is long overdue in this country. Parents will probably be shocked to learn that that such legislation does not already exist. Staff who suspect abuse may report it, but face no sanction for failing to report…..As a result of non existence of law, staff who do report are whistleblowers and have no statutory protection when speaking out in the most challenging of circumstances.

Daniel Pelka investigation deploys updated methods

The serious case review into Daniel’s death is expected to report in mid-September. Whatever its findings, there is an urgent need for new law to require the mandatory reporting of child abuse in regulated activities across the UK.

Ireland is now in the process of implementing legislation to better protect children, and comments last week indicate Wales may also now be willing to consider mandatory reporting.

We have a window of opportunity to make a difference, when media interest peaks around the report next month – please ask everyone you know (and anyone else…) to sign for Daniel’s Law.

In the press today: Child protection experts in Coventry are using new methods for analysing child deaths as part of their investigation into how Daniel Pelka died, CYP Now can reveal
